– 24. 01. 2024

On the occasion of the Annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, the Centre for Jewish Cultural Heritage of the Maribor Synagogue and the Cankar Publishing House invite you to the presentation and discussion of the book The Volunteer. This event will take place on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. at the Synagogue Maribor, Židovska 4, Maribor.

H.E. dr. Krzysztof Olendzki, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland; Boris Hajdinjak, Director of the Centre for Jewish Cultural Heritage of the Maribor Synagogue; and Aljoša Harlamov, Editor-in-Chief of the Cankar Publishing House will discuss the book The Volunteer by Jack Fairweather.

The Volunteer: The True Story Of The Resistance Hero Who Infiltrated Auschwitz tells the incredible true story of Wiktor Pilecki, a Polish resistance fighter who infiltrated Auschwitz to sabotage the camp from within, and his death-defying attempt to warn the Allies about the Nazis’ plans for a “Final Solution” before it was too late. Completely erased from the historical record by Poland’s post-war Communist government, Pilecki remains almost unknown to the world. With exclusive access to previously hidden diaries, family and camp survivor accounts, and recently declassified files, Jack Fairweather offers an unflinching portrayal of survival, revenge and betrayal in mankind’s darkest hour. He also reveals that its ultimate defeat of Pilecki’s mission originated not in Auschwitz or Berlin, but in London and Washington.

The conversation will be held in English.
You are cordially invited!
