On the eve of the 2 August 1944, the Nazis abolished the “Zigeunerlager” (“Gypsy camp”) in Auschwitz-Birkenau and in one single night killed several thousand Sinti and Roma in gas chambers. In memory of this tragic event is the 2nd of August in individual countries marked as the International Genocide of the Roma Remembrance Day.
At this year International Porrajmos Remembrance Day the Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor in cooperation with partnering organizations the Association of Roma community “Umbrella-Dežnik”, Roma information centre “Anglunipe”, GT22 and Sonda Foundation is cordially inviting you to attend the commemorative event The Night That Silenced the Violins.
We will honour the victims of Porrajmos with projection of the documentary “A ti Bože preživi” by author Ljuan Koka. The film was one of the first documentaries, which presented the suffer of Roma in Jasenovac concentration camp.
The film projection will be held on Thursday, 27 July 2017, at 6 p. m. in the Maribor Synagogue, Židovska ulica 4. The honorary speaker will be Mr Stanko Baluh, Director of the Office for National Minorities of the Republic of Slovenia.
Ljuan Koka (1960, Prizren) je romsko-srbski scenarist, novinar, politolog in politik. Diplomiral je na Fakulteti za politične vede v Beogradu, specializacijo pa je zaključil v New Delhiju. Je priznan medijski in družbeno-politični delavec, aktiven je zlasti na področju zaščite narodnih in etničnih manjšin. Za film A ti, Bog, preživi! je leta 1988 na televizijskem festivalu v Neumu prejel tretjo nagrado.
Prireditev Noč, ko so violine obmolknile organiziramo v sklopu projekta Kamnite solze, ki ga je podprla Mestna občina Maribor. Med letoma 2014 in 2016 smo projekt Kamnite solze razvijali s podporo Mednarodne zveze za spomin na holokavst – IHRA.
Ljuan Koka (1960, Prizren) is a Roma-Serbian screenwriter, journalist and politician. He graduated at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade; afterwards he concluded also a specialization in New Delhi. He is a renowned media, social and political worker, and is active in particular in the field of national and ethnical minorities’ protection. For his documentary “A ti Bože preživi” he was awarded the 3rd prize at the television festival in Neum in 1988.
The event “The Night That Silenced the Violins” will be organized within the framework of the project “Stone Tears”, which is supported by Municipality of Maribor. The project “Stone Tears” was between the years 2014 and 2016 developed with the support of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance – IHRA.
