Lana Soklič – Alienated domesticity, on display at the Synagogue Maribor from 16 to 30 September 2023.
Lana Soklič (1998) attended III. Elementary School in Celje. In 2017, she graduated from the art gymnasium in Celje, majoring in fine arts, and after finishing high school enrolled at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. A year later, she changed her course of study and transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, where she graduated in 2012 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Academy.
Alienated domesticity is a series where the artist explores the concept of crop. In her creation, Lana Soklič works primarily through analog photography, which she says allows her a wide range of experiments and allows her to incorporate coincidences into the final image. The technique itself allows her to manipulate and transcend boundaries and compose various other segments into her work, leading to a multi-dimensional effect in her photographs. In his work, he introduces various themes such as transience, feeling and emotional distress. Through her schooling, she realized that such topics, such as emotional states and inspirations from her own perceptions and perceptions, are what represent the most important aspect of her work. She sought inspiration for the series Alienated domesticity in the views of her apartment and the academy, in general places that are home, familiar to her, surrounded the space and changed it with the help of double exposure, so that its atmosphere changed from familiar to alienated, eerie and dark. In the foreground is the relationship between light and shadow, where the presented opposing axes of alienation and domesticity are combined into a coherent whole. It is precisely this duality and the changed atmosphere that connect well with the previously mentioned themes that the artist pursues in her works, because the seen series can evoke uncertainty and anxiety in the viewer through the withdrawal of the familiar. Lana Soklič takes us from the earthly to an alienated sphere, which we cannot quite place in a familiar, soothing and comfortable universe.
