Lost Illusions of a Forlorn Time – In Memory of the Destruction of Vijećnica

August 25th, 1992, marked the destruction of Sarajevo’s most famous landmark of the Austro-Hungarian era. The s. c. Vijećnica served as the National University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1947.

On August 25th, the smoke from the grenades launched by the aggressor destroyed more than 90% of the library material, with over 2 million books, articles and other treasures lost forever. The destruction of Vijećnica meant the loss of invaluable books and cultural heritage as well as the destruction of a beautiful and cherished cultural monument.

To commemorate the destruction of Vijećnica number of events will took place in Maribor on August 25th, 2012 (symposium, photographic and art exhibitions, literary evening, film projection with musical programme).

18.00: LITERARY EVENING (Maribor Synagogue)

19.00: ART EXHIBITION (Festić Gallery)

20.00: FILM PROJECTION WITH MUSICAL PROGRAMME (Jewish Square)

 

The project was organized by Festić Gallery, University of Maribor Library and RAZ:UM Exhibition Centre. Co-producer of the project is Maribor 2012 – European Capital of Culture.
