Gunter Demnig’s art project “The Stumbling Stones” (Stolpersteine) has been going on since 1994 on the principle of “one stone for one name”. The project awakens the until recently nameless and forgotten victims of Nazism. It is a standardized memorial in the form of a stone pavement coated with a layer of brass in which the personal data of each victim are engraved.
So far, 12 Stumbling Stones have already been laid in Maribor, and 23 in Ljubljana. Alltogether, more than 70,000 have been laid since 1996.
The Stumbling Stones will be laid on 17 September 2019 in Lendava and Murska Sobota, and on 18 September 2019 in Ljubljana. Every stone with the victim’s personal information will be placed in front of the house, which was the person’s last known address.
