The traveling documentary exhibition “Auschwitz – A Place on Earth. The Auschwitz Album” by Yad Vashem – The World Holocaust Remembrance Center, will be displayed in the former Nazi concentration camp Stalag XVIIID in Maribor. The latter today houses the International Research Center for Second World War Maribor (MRC Maribor).
This documentary exhibition features the only surviving photographs depicting all stages of the extermination of Jews at Auschwitz, with the exception of the killings in the gas chambers. After the war, due to their exceptional value, they were used in trials against the guards at this camp; and even today they remain one of the most reliable evidences against Holocaust deniers. The photographs were taken in late May 1944, just as the largest group of Slovenian Jews from Prekmurje arrived at Auschwitz, most of them being killed immediately upon the arrival. The Slovenian version of the exhibition was prepared by the Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor, which also expanded the original exhibition to include a presentation on the fate of the Jews of Prekmurje in Auschwitz.
The exhibition opening in MRC Maribor (between Trdinova and Einspilerjeva streets in Maribor district ‘Melje’) will be held on Friday, 23 January 2026, at 11 am. The opening will be accompanied by a short seminar. The exhibition will be on display until the end of 2026.
