The Franc Ksaver Meško Library in Ormož, in cooperation with the Synagogue Maribor, cordially invites you to a lecture by Boris Hajdinjak entitled “The Inhabitants of Medieval Ormož”.

In 1331, Herdegen I of Ptuj and his (half)brother Frederick VII granted town privileges to the inhabitants of Ormož. The granting of town privileges was prompted by the economically interesting border with Hungary, but certainly also by the residence of the Ormož branch of the Lords of Ptuj dynasty in Ormož Castle. The parish church of St. James, built before 1354, indicates that a parish priest was probably one of the inhabitants of medieval Ormož as well, and given the importance of the parish, probably also other clergy. Most of the inhabitants of Ormož were bourgeois (“true” citizens) and town dwellers (other residents of the town). The elderly and sick inhabitants of medieval Ormož were cared for in the hospital, while the city baths ensured the basic hygiene for all inhabitants. Last but not the least, the economic importance of the town is evidenced by the brief presence of Jews in the mid-14th century.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, 6 November 2025, at the Franc Ksaver Meško Library in Ormož.
