– 03. 09. 2020

As part of the events Shoah – Let Us Remember 2020, dedicated to commemorating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the largest Nazi concentration camp, we organised a rememberence ceremony.

The rememberence ceremony was held on Thursday, 23 January 2020, at 18:00 at Synagogue Maribor, Židovska ulica 4.

On this occasion, we opened a documentary exhibition “Here Is Where Death Worked Itself to Death…”: the Slovenian victims of Auschwitz. The exhibition tells about around 2,300 people from Slovenia who were taken to this camp. Most were Slovenes, but also deported with them were some 350 Jews, at least 78 Roma, and at least one member of Jehovah’s Witnesses from Slovenia. For around 1,300 of them, Auschwitz is the place of death, which means that it is one of the largest cemeteries of the Slovenian victims of World War II.

The honorary speaker at the event was the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, Mag. Zoran Poznic, who was also the honorary sponsor of the project Shoah – Let Us Remember 2020. The exhibition was presented by its author Boris Hajdinjak, and the presentation was accompanied by a screening of a short video directed by Domen Kodrič.

After the opening of the exhibition, there was be a concert by the Duo Sinergos chamber ensemble. The band is comprised of flutists Mina Čkojić and Ana Nikolić. At their premiere performance in Slovenia, they presented their latest concert repertoire with a selection of compositions by Jewish composers.

The exhibition will be on display in Synagogue Maribor untill beginning of September.
