European Days of Jewish Culture 2016

The European Days of Jewish Culture (EDJC) is an all-European project that provides the visitors to its events a comprehensive insight into individual aspects of Jewish culture and heritage.

In the scope of the project, a variety of programmes, such as open doors days, guided tours, exhibitions, lectures, concerts, etc., enable visitors to discover the beauties and richness of Jewish culture, as well as encourage public awareness on the importance of Jewish heritage protection and preservation within European cultural heritage. Each year, the EDJC project is dedicated to the specific topic from Jewish day-to-day life; this year it is devoted to “Jewish languages”.

In Slovenia, the EDJC 2016 will be hosted in Maribor, Lendava, Ljubljana, Murska Sobota and Negova. The EDJC programme will start on Friday, 2 September at 7 p.m. in Lendava. On the central day of the project – Sunday, 4 September – we are kindly inviting visitors to the events in MariborLjubljana and Negova. In these cities, the events will be in progress throughout the day, while on Monday, 5 September two more lectures on the project’s topic will be organized in Murska Sobota. The lectures will start at 6 p.m.

The EDJC project will be concluded in Slovenia on Tuesday, 6 September, at 6 p.m. with the opening of the exhibition “Jewish Languages” in the Synagogue Maribor. The exhibition was prepared by The National Library of Israel, while it will be opened by the honorary patron of the European Days of Jewish Culture 2016 in Slovenia Mr Anton Peršak, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.

Visit to all programmes, except for the theatre play, is free.

The national coordinator of the EDJC project is Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor.
