On 26 April it will be 72 years since the beginning of mass deportations of Jews from Prekmurje. On this day in 1944, the largest group of Prekmurje Jews was gathered in Lendava and Murska Sobota and taken first to Čakovec, then to Nagykanizsa, and from there to the largest death camp – Auschwitz-Birkenau. Only a handful of Slovenian Jews survived the Holocaust.
In order to honour the memory of the victims of the Holocaust in Slovenia, we invite you to a memorial event organized in cooperation with Janko Glazerj Ruša Elementary School. The memorial event will be held on Thursday, 21 April 2016, at 5 p.m. in the Synagogue Maribor, Židovska ulica 4.
The cultural programme was prepared by the students of Janko Glazer Ruša Elementary School under the mentorship of teacher Ljiljana Mićović Struger. The event will be accompanied by an exhibition, which was also prepared by the students of the Russian school under the mentorship of teachers Suzana Špindler and Melita Kladnik.
Welcome!
The event is organized as part of the Stone Tears project, which was supported by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance – IHRA and the Municipality of Maribor. In 2016, Elektro Maribor also supported the project.
