An Uncomfortable Neighbourhood. Jews in Ukraine Through Time, lecture by Dr Aleš Maver

Today’s Ukraine is one of the most important scenes of Jewish history in Europe. The Jewish community in her area includes the mystic Baal Shem Tov, writers Joseph Roth and Isaak Babel, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and current Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, among others. On the other hand, there are essential places of Jewish martyrdom in Ukraine, such as Babin Yar in Kiev. In the lecture, we will walk through the different stages of the Jewish presence in this part of Eastern Europe. The lecture will be given by Prof. Dr Aleš Maver, Deputy Head of the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor and Department Tutor.
