opening of the travelling exhibition of the Maribor Synagogue in the synagogue in Nagykanizsa on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 12:15

The documentary exhibition A story of two transports. Jews in Međimurje and Prekmurje during the Holocaust presents the long history of Jews in the area of Prekmurje and Mežimurje, the rise and flourishing of Jewish communities in this area, their contribution to the development of cities and towns in both regions, and the sad fate that befell them during the Holocaust. The exhibition by the author Boris Hajdinjak, director of the Maribor Synagogue, was originally made in a Slovenian-English language version, but for the visit to the synagogue in Nagykanizsa, where the exhibition has been on display since May of this year, its Hungarian-English version was also prepared. As part of the opening ceremony, a memorial plaque will be erected at the former Winter Agricultural School (Téli gazdasági iskola), where Jews from Prekmurje and Mežimurje, as well as Nagykanizsa and surrounding areas were imprisoned shortly before being deported to the Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

On that day, a varied programme will also take place next to the opening of the exhibition, details of which you can find HERE.

The opening of the travelling exhibition has been included in the EDJC 2025 in Slovenia.
