Slovenian Day of Culture

Open doors day

8. 2. 2013, between 10.00 and 14.00

Each year on the 8th of February, in honour of the Slovene national poet France Prešeren, we celebrate the Prešeren Day, with which we commemorate the poet’s life and work. On this occasion Slovene museums, galleries and other cultural institutions open their doors to public with a desire for a wider public to get a better knowledge about artistic and cultural creative processes.

The Maribor Synagogue joins this year celebration and will be on the 8th of February open from 10.00 until 14.00. Visitors are welcome to visit a former Jewish synagogue that currently holds a photographic exhibition Jude sein – Being Jewish. The author of the exhibition is Viennese photographer Peter Rigaud, who presents in his project the question about Jewish identity. Through series of portraits of Viennese Jews author tries to find answers on questions: Who is Jewish? What is individual Judaism about? Who was a Jew since always and who decided to become a Jew later? And finally, the exhibition is exposing the ultimate question to each and every one of us: Who Am I?

In the frame of the Open Doors Day the visitors are also invited to see a short documentary film about the former synagogue and its history, as well as to join us at one of the two guided tours through the synagogue and the current exhibition. Guided tours will be at 11.00 and 13.00.
